How to get to Wellington

Wellington can be reached by road, rail or air.

AIR: You can also fly into the country at Wellington. Other International centres include Auckland and Christchurch if you plan to take in some sight seeing as part of your journey.

Check the airlines (Qantas, Air New Zealand) or your travel agent for timetable and bookings.

RAIL: The rail trip from Auckland to Wellington takes a full day, and is quite scenic if you have the time. Check Tranz Scenic or your travel agent for timetable and bookings.

ROAD: If travelling by car, Wellington is about 10 hours from Auckland. Rental cars are available from airports. The two main coach companies are InterCity and Newmans.

Tips for overseas travellers

Important! If you are not a resident of Australia or New Zealand, you may need to get a Visitor's Permit. Certain nationals need to have their passport endorsed with a Visitor's Visa before departure. This process may take up to one month. The New Zealand currency is cents (c) and dollars ($), with 100 cents equal to one dollar. Coins are in the denominations of 10c, 20c, 50c, $1, and $2. There are $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 notes available. One New Zealand dollar is worth approximately 59 US cents.

There are automatic teller machines in the airport and throughout most cities, should you wish to withdraw cash on your credit or debit cards.
